Why Anarcho-Capitalism Can’t Work

As I've become more mentally involved in Libertarian ideals, I've mulled over the idea of anarchy more and more.  For the most part, everything makes sense.  That is, it makes perfect sense to me that the free market would not only survive without government but that it would be far more efficient than any situation that includes a government.  This, in turn, would likely result in a far greater quality of life for citizens that do not suffer government interference.

However, I can't get past the idea that any given society will eventually 1) take Liberty for granted and 2) be willing to surrender their freedom, either voluntarily or by force, to something they believe is greater than themselves.  Large companies will always have incentive to take advantage of citizens.  If citizens don't value their Liberty enough — and it seems that eventually all societies who enjoy Liberty eventually become complacent — it seems that one or more companies would eventually find ways to gradually remove the freedoms of citizens for some greater economic gain for themselves.  So then what, in a stateless society, would prevent a company from playing the same role that governments play today?

I've yet to hear a response to this question that satisfies me and I'm eager to hear what you folks have to say.
