As a believer in Christian biblical prophecy, I know the European Union will rise as the world's last super power after the USA loses that position. I have wondered many times what it would be that would take out the USA as the number one leader of the world. Chris, you answered my question. I'm keeping my attention on Iran with a more informed eye. With the knowledge you supplied here with this blog entry, I now know what to look for when searching for answers concerning the rise of the EU.

One of the questions I have about the invasion of Iran is will the governments around Iran switch to the euro just to punish America for its obvious upcoming invasion? This idea reminds me a little of the movie Syriana with G. Clooney. Will the USA take out potential leaders who are for switching to the euro just to get back at the USA? We (the USA through the Iraq government) certainly had no problem in hanging Saddam and his followers. Shouldn't we expect the same harsh treatment in return for our actions?

Nice article on the dollar/euro wars.
One aspect that you did not mention that is quite disturbing is that one of the consequences of the financially irresponsible policies of this administration and our instant gratification oriented populace is that the dollar is teetering on the brink of a major devaluation.
The ballooning national debt, the bursting housing bubble and the trade deficit are all very serious problems because they make the dollar less stable and attractive. At some point one of our big creditors (China or Japan or Europe) is going to decide that the risk of holding on to all of these devaluing dollars is not worth it, and then there will be a huge sell off as everyone tries to get out before the dollar tanks. Then the reason for using the dollar for the reserve currency will be gone, and with it our special advantages in the world economy.

On a separate subject: It is always startling when I hear about an otherwise intelligent person who bravely admits to having voted for our asshat in chief. After all, Al Gore may have been lacking in charisma (or even signs of non robotic life), but no one thought he was an idiot. The idea that we could be successfully led by an aging frat boy is a curious fantasy, and hopefully one that is permanently exploded.

Interesting article , however just to pick up on one thing you said:

"The Euro-zone does not run a huge trade deficit nor is it heavily indebted to the rest of the world like the U.S. and interest rates in the Euro-zone are also significantly higher"

from looking at different financial site the ECB rate has been lower than the US rate at least for the last year!

What an eye opening article. I knew the iraq war was purely oil based. Great read but very frightening.

Oil(gas) for euro ...simply because the euro is evolving into a gold-euro through its ECB (european central bank) that is marking to market its goldreserves.
Once the world is allowed to know that the past 3 decades of cheap Arabian oil were only possible thanks to the flow of cheap gold to the Saudi Arabia oil-central bank...
then most will start to understand what the gold-euro really means.

I've have been preaching the same message to my family and friends for about a year now. We invaded Iraq under false pretences to protect the petro-dollar. The Amercan people fell for this trick once but I don't believe the American people will be fooled by the same trick twice. Instead it will have to be more ellaborate. I believe that it is perfectly plausible that the new action taking place in the middle east between hezbollah and Israel is part of an ellaborate plan to bait Iran into an armed conflict with an US ally that we would most certanly rally to defend. This gives the US its war with Iran that we say "we don't want and can't win", and allows the US to delay the Iranian oil bourse though it has been delaying itself. There we have a more ellaborate repeat of Iraq.
