Pandora

Friday, October 7th, 2005

Ever wish there was a program that could analyze a song in hundreds of different ways and find more music like it by different artists? Well, someone did it. Sites like Amazon will mine their sales database for records of other purchases by those who have bought the song. Pandora, instead, looks for songs with a similar musical profile, based on a database of 300,000 songs rated on up to 400 characteristics like rhythmic syncopation, vamping and vocal harmonies. It’s pretty cool… check it out.

Harvey Danger releases their album free of charge as MP3s

Monday, October 3rd, 2005

- Recording a CD: $2000
- Ripping your CD: $0
- Saying ‘Screw you’ to the RIAA’s business model and getting Slashdotted for publicity: Priceless

Harvey Danger released their newest album, Little by Little free of charge in MP3 format on their website today.
From their website, ‘In preparing to self-release our new album, we thought long and hard about how best to use the internet. Given our unusual history, and a long-held sense that the practice now being demonized by the music biz as “illegal” file sharing can be a friend to the independent musician, we have decided to embrace the indisputable fact of music in the 21st century, put our money where our mouth is, and make our record, Little By Little…, available for download via Bittorrent, and at our website. We’re not streaming, or offering 30-second song samples, or annoying you with digital rights management software; we’re putting up the whole record, for free, forever. Full stop. Please help yourself; if you like it, please share with friends.’

Pretty cool. Download it here.
